Berlin · Timeless
diagnosis of our everyday interaction with technology
Gabriel Shalom #5406, the founder of the creative studio KS12. in his latest project, Timeless Shalom explores that space where our use of technology intersects with how and where we experience our physical selves. in the form of interviews, this video essay addresses questions such as what is the contemporary concept of reality, space, time, identity... and crucially, what is the current thinking we hold of ourselves? Timeless poses this and other queries to a well-chosen group of creatives, thinkers and practitioners who work on the borders of art, music, technology and science. and as expected, each talking head has their different theorectical and philosophical answers as the boundary between technology and physicality become ever porous.
current society is not only seeing a convergence between different technologies. again and again we are seeing the massive assertion technology has over and on our bodies; our minds and identifies. as Vivian van Gaal puts it. "...Yeah, sometimes I really need help to re-enter my body again. The signals of hunger and thirst… I don't receive them anymore.” Boundaries are becoming blurred... literally disappearing.
this may all sound a bit abstract, but is in fact rather simple. are we getting carried away in the trickle, then river now flood of data, images, links and audio files we access on a daily basis. what is actually important? what makes it so? why do we pay so much attention to things, which, after reflecting upon in the cold light of day, often turn out to be trivial and unimportant.
Timeless is a lucid, beautful and beguilingly shot diagnosis of the current state of our technologal frenzy. it also predicts what the future may bring. Platoon member Peter Kirn #5777 is one of those interviewed in Timeless (read his brilliant write up on his blog Creative Digital Motion) surmises his thoughts on the future nicely: “...Answers are lofty at times, but they also speak to highly personal moments of vulnerability and uncertainty, that instant when it isn’t clear what will happen next in our cyborg existence.” Peter also contributed two songs for the video, which you can hear in the background.
Timeless does not make value judgements. it does not define what is good nor bad. Timeless simply calls our attention to the care and diligence we pay to our online presence and consumption while subtly highlighting the impact this has on our off line selves. no one can question that technology - and our use of it - is causing fundamental changes on a personal, societal, philosophical, economical and ontological level. it is up to us to find a balance in all of this, in how we use it.
Timeless is a profound and thought-provoking piece, but take the time to look at The Future of Money, The Future of Art and other inspiring projects by Gabriel Shalom.

HELSINKI · REVIEW: cut&paste 2012
an escapade at -29 degrees
this time around we mobilized our network on location to get the show on the road. we had Helsinki under the radar since a while and were exploring its cultural scene as a possible city for future operations.
also John Fiorelli #4002 (founder cut&paste) showed great interested and so we started talks with Antti Kirjalainen #6120 from the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 and our network members in Finland in order to find the right team to make this event happen.
we were lucky to find a good partner with FJORD thanks to Ksenia Avetisova #3434, one of the PLATOON network members who helped us a lot when we started to explore Helsinki at the beginning of last year. And she was so excited to join our efforts that we confirmed Helsinki as part of the 2011/12 Cut&Paste tour.
Cut&Paste Helsinki at the cultural center Korjaamo turned out to be a blast. it was smaller and cosier then volksbühne and with about 300 guests it was already packed as we wished. it felt like a flashback... same game different stage... the audience was excited as much as the competitors, being truly responsive, especially thanks to the talented MC Joelle Reefer #6111, which spellbound the audience with his natural charme.
the NOTIC NASTIC performance was just incredible... their music really is like an earworm crowling deeper in your mind. and also the finnish crowd was totally into it. unfortunately for both events a part of the audience didnt have the patience to wait until their liveact... shame... i mean unfortunately for those who left, those who stayed were rewarded with musical blessings and a fat bass massage which im sure they wont forget. we had the pleasure to get to know the band better off stage and we can say these girls and their crew will make a long way.
being in such a creative setting we couldnt miss the chance to make knew friends and members. so we did some old school recruiting on location, it's always a great opportunity to meet members in person in their own environment.
for PLATOON as an international network of creative minds this was a perfect development: a new and radical format for Helsinki, which surely had a cultural impact and it brought people, projects and companies together for cultural development.
a big up for Helsinki!
we´ll be back ;)

BERLIN · Cut&Paste Returns
come out to see berlins fastest designers
You are invited to the Volksbühne on 2nd February, 2012, to witness the budding young designers determine their destiny. It's all moderated by Germany's Beatbox Champion Mando, who will beatbox around the stage.
It's the rare chance to see brave talented designers take the stage and show off their lightning speed shortcut skills and wow you with their exquisite and superb designs in 2D, 3D, and Motion Design categories. Oh did we mention they must complete their task within the given 15 to 20 minute time limit?
You are certain to be amazed by what the brilliant designers can produce within their allotted time, and it's guaranteed to be full of energy; emotions will run high and there will be a contagious sense of adrenaline in the air.
You will witness in awe as the competitors race against the clock to determine their own design destiny and watch as the winners in each category are awarded a trip to NYC to compete at the Cut&Paste Global Championship in March.
As well as the live competition, there will be a public audience design challenge for anyone wanting to participate, and to seek out audience members harboring any hidden design talents!
Once the winners are chosen, an unforgettable afterparty kicks in first with Vjs Pfadfinderei for a dazzling light show, followed by electro-pop experts Notic Nastic leading the night with freaky beats. Socialize with Berlin's top professional designers, media brands, and agencies who also turn up to interact and network with today's young talented designers.
One of the main motivations behind Cut&Paste is to demystify the often invisible design process - and at the same time make it more exciting. What really happens when working on "the creatives" behind an idea? Cut&Paste shows that it is a mixture of tools and courage that count most in successful design.
The live competition takes place on 02.02.2012 at the Volksbühne in Berlin. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are now on sale HERE!
Come out to support the brave designers, mix with distinguished professionals and media, and bring your friends for an unforgettable night.
Cut&Paste is organized by PLATOON Cultural Development and sponsored by Cine Plus, supported by to Novum, Berlin Design Blog, and Slanted.

BERLIN · Berlin-based startup Gidsy gets funded
authentic tours coming to a city near you
congratulations to the people at Gidsy, including members Edial Dekker #4769 & Philipp Wassibauer #4158. to be honest, we weren't terribly surprised at the news considering we knew the Gidsy group was destined for big things.
but it nonetheless impressed us that Ashton Kutcher, Sunstone Capital, Index Ventures, Werner Vogels, and Peter Read funded Gisdy with $1.2 million in seed funding. Gidsy already operate tours in Berlin, New York, and Amsterdam.
and now it's official: San Fransicso is getting Gidsy too!
according to the site 'Gidsy is a marketplace for authentic experiences', meaning that individuals can decide to host a tour on any topic they choose, adding authenticity to any activity they are knowledgeable about.
it hosts guided tours that break away from the sometimes drab tourist industry that dominates big cities, and some non-conventional tours too that are also of interest to any locals. coffee tasting tours, burger tour experiences, and nightlife introductions are not just for the visiting backpackers!
equally Gidsy give more than just an authentic experience, it also offers gems to the locals and gives them ways to experience their city and connect with likeminded adventurers. it doesn't stop at tours, but expands into lunchtime yoga classes, collective drawing workshops and even a Berlin startup how-to discussion.
and tours themselves are not your everyday ordinary tour in that most hosts come from the Gidsy community, the groups are small and the prices extremely low. so check out a tour, before Gidsy takes over the world!
next up: London.

ROME · REVIEW: RE-CYCLE
Strategies for architecture, city and planet
we are glad of having being included in the book about the exhibition published by Electa and Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo.
If you happen to be in Rome, you still have time to see the actual exhibition, which runs at MAXXI until the 26th of april, so if you are close, don´t miss it.
the book is all about drawings, photographs, writings and other materials composing a contemporary map of recycling, devoted to exemplary projects that involve the recycling of architecture, cities and landscapes together with works by artists, photographers and media producers, we´ve once again been featured in the container architecture section, although you all know that’s not the only thing we do.
however the use of the containers really has been lifted to a higher level, the containers persists in contemporary experimentation as an itinerant object, as a global nomadic space, they are turned into a component that can be assembled and adapted as a single space or a series of spaces, its manufacture, transportation and assembly fulfills the demand of a market searching for low cost solutions. examples listed in the book are testimony on how containers set a whole new architectural rules, as a mobile and advantageous and economical object.other examples of container architecture mentioned in the catalogue are: sky is the limit, sjakket youth centre ,Container House ( Killer House ) , Freitag Flagship Store Zurich, Cruise Centre , Sanlitun South and Qubic Amsterdam.
we also enjoyed very much other projects escaping the container theme, for instance the series of workshops and urban interventions led by Raumlabor Berlin, a Berllin based architectual and urban planning collective, which definitely left an impact behind. one of the workshops is Officina roma, an experimental building practice made all out of trash and recycled materials, build within an one week long workshop with 24 high school students from all over italy.
the building is composed as a collage, a kitchen entirely build out of old bottles, the sleeping room with walls from used car doors, the workshop using wooden windows and old furniture and the main roof set from old oil barrels and used dry wall profiles... wicked !

MONTREAL· INTERACTIVE WINTER
iregular presents
our members Santiago Ramos Bravo #5458 and Daniel Iregui #5762 done some really great things..
Control no control is very entertaining and effective installation which focuses on body, space and sound within the framework of digital architecture and it was presented at Igloofest, an outdoor music festival in Montreal, from Jan 12 -28, 2012.
we already reported on festival du nouveau cinema in montreal, where irregular presented their interactive installation Full Moon, from october 12- 22, 2011.
full moon evolves and transforms based on the use of human voices. Like wolves howling at the full moon, spectators were invited to make a sound into an intriguingly surreal megaphone in the middle of the Promenade des artistes, all treated to one of the 10 "carte blanche" short films commissioned by the Festival and its 40th edition.
And from June 1st til 5th 2011 Jean-Sebastien Baillat, Guillaume Cardell and Daniel Iregui present PERIOD, a work that extends the experiential campaign developed for MUTEK (with Pointbarre) and housed at MUTEK.ORG/PLAY festival.
besides being a reknown electronic musik festival, mutek is also a not-for-profit organization, mandated to provide a platform for the most original and visionary artists currently working in their fields, with the intent of providing an outlet of initiation and discovery for the audiences they seek to develop.
Period was housed at MUTEK.ORG/PLAY, project was projected against the UQAM´s facade it brings together PLAY´s visual blocks and sounds (conceived by Jean-Sebastien Roux) into a spontaneous tableau of inventive playfulness....

BERLIN · REVIEW: Cut&Paste 2012
battle of the boldest and bravest designers
BERLIN · What a night! Last Thursday we presented Cut&Paste Berlin, the live digital design battle at Volksbühne Berlin. We were very excited about the event and it totally exceeded all expectations in terms of the amazing talent and confidence of the designers and the expertise of the judges.
Cut&Paste was founded by John Fiorelli #4002 in 2006 to shine a light on the design process and give designers the recognition they deserve by bringing the work they do to an enthusiastic audience who can witness firsthand the kind of savvy talent and compromises that go into every good design.
During the 15 - 20 minute heat, both 2D and 3D competitors battled on stage to complete their pre-planned design based on a theme, given them a few days before the event. As John explained to the designers backstage before they took their places in front of their public, once they're on stage, any feelings of being nervous or insecure vanish once the clock starts. And it was certainly true. As the designers began constructing, drawing and designing their 2D or 3D image, they were all pros. The result was an impressive mix of graphic, illustration and urbanized art that presented a brilliant array of stellar designs. Luckily our judges were professionals themselves because I would be at a loss to determine who should win the crown and go to NYC to compete at the Cut&Paste Final later this year.
Meanwhile the PLATOON network really came together to give each other the support to execute a perfect evening. There was STAGE BROTHERS (Marc Brinkmeier #331 and Manuel Reinartz #5977) who documented the night spectacularly and an equipped camera crew (Jonny Brooking #5943, Sahar Lone #5944, Julia Kloiber #3291and Mata #340) conducting interviews with competitors, judges, and collecting footage for the PLATOON archive. Everyone helped out with running the Adobe audience contest, rounding up the lost competitors and judges, and making sure the afterparty with PFADFINDEREI and NOTIC NASTIC rocked!
Honza, KRSN and Skate made a killer audio/visual show!
And the girls from NOTIC NASTIC were simply breathtaking...we sweated off till the end, even getting up on the stage to dance around. Check out the NOTIC NASTIC video to get a good feeling from the event.
So a special congratulations goes out to our winners Acci Baba in 2D, Armin Keplinger in 3D, & Leo Marthaler in Motion Design, and our runner up in 2D AARGH, who walked away with a new sense of self and a gold crown. And the judges offered the best critiques and compliments and many stuck around afterwards to join in at the afterparty. Special thanks to the competitors and judges who put so much passion and enthusiasm into the evening.
If you missed out this time don't worry, we´ll be doing it again!

BERLIN · Month of performance art
Needs your help!
now MPA-B is gearing up for another successful month of May, but first they need your help! the latest crowdfunding project from INKUBATO is to support performance artists and keep the thriving artist community in Berlin alive, creative, and an autonomous cultural player.
PLATOON friend and member Francesca Romana Ciardi #3292 (among our many performance artists involved in the project) tipped us off for the crowdfunding campaign and teamed up with INKUBATO founder Konrad Lauten #5302 to lay out their campaign to seek the minimum nessecary sponsorship to cover the logistical and production costs ahead for the next addition of MONTH OF PERFORMACE ART in Berlin during MAY 2012.
in 2011, MPA-B saw its first year with 40 curated events, 100 participating artists, curators and producers, 25 hosting venues/locations and thousands of both on-site and online visitors. it was almost entirely an artist funded project, relying on crowdfunding and fundraising conducted by the performance art community.
come out and support Berlin's performers and get the program rolling!
equally, if you're a performer yourself there is still time to apply to participate in the MAY festivities. see here for more info on getting involved. the deadline is MARCH 1.
'MPA-B brings together artists, curators, producers, venues, networks and organisations, which operate beyond and across the boundaries of institutionalised performing arts structures, with the objective of:
-facilitating connections and developing actions of cooperation amongst hosting venues, curators and other independent players working in the field of Performance Art;
-promoting and drawing attention to a thriving but often overlooked community of artists and Performance Art practitioners whose work challenges, explores and embodies a multiplicity of artistic forms and languages;
-fostering innovative critical discourses and practice-based exchanges and interactions between Performance Art makers and audiences;
-documenting and therefore tracing, as well as enriching, the contemporary history of Performance Art practices existing in the city through the annual Berlin Performance Art Report.'
and if you don't have money to give because you're a struggling artist yourself, help by spreading the word and coming out in MAY to watch some of Berlin's best performers do what they do best!
