last weekend i went to busan to meet old friends at the PIFF (pusan int. film festival). it was great, but it was terrible to observe that even in busan mass modernisation is destroying the charming atmosphere of the second biggest city of korea located at the south coast. busan has now the biggest department store in the world and they seem to be proud of it. well congratulations!

but there are still some remains in the city far away from the fancy film festival that are resisting the delusion of modernization. the samseong cinema in which former showcase artist eun-ho lee has organized the unique art show: cinema exhibition (극장전).

eun-ho managed to gather some young artists to show their works in the different rooms of the old cinema, which was built in 1951. the totally rotten down historic building offers a creative scenery for an unusual exhibition.

outside the building next to the new constructed road street artist kay 2 placed the right mark of resistence.

on the second floor in front of the toilets paintings by chang-yong shin (신창용) honor action stars in a rough pop-art style.

video artist heung-soon im (임흥순) decided to show one of his video works in the loge on the second floor. however, he decided at the end that this space is an artwork itself so he left the screen white.

on the balcony on the third floor the characters of PLATOON KUNSTHALLE studio artist junkhouse and sixcoin express the "desire mountain" referring to the whole cinema and especially to the little room at the end of this balcony where there is a bunch of old mattresses. every day the stuff is lying around in a different way and there are weird phantasies drawn on the walls. hmmmmm....

... where do the people get these strange ideas? maybe by watching the films which are usually shown in this old cinema? this is the program you can find at the entrance: red cherry 4 and betty blue.
