SEOUL · a noise is what you are likely to ignore either consciously or subconsciously amongst our surroundings. probably because you know the sound is going to fade away sooner or later. in most cases, however, people normally don't stand against long-term auditory stimuli which would get on their nerves slightly or extremely somehow.

put your shoes in a place where the white noise goes on for 20 minutes and how you would feel without any sound after those 20 minutes of the white noise. this sort of sound performance was invented by WILL SCHRIMSHAW and JAMIE ALLEN for resonator as a part of AV FESTIVAL UK 2010). this canadian sound artist called JAMIE ALLEN takes an unconventional path adding a lot of creation and imagination. he is open to the integration of any kind of art form & technology and its possibility as you can tell from his previous acts such as speaker sketch; he devised a speaker with a drawing paper on it that moves a drawing implement and sound performance, acoustic subtraction which was executed at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE last tuesday night.

it happened almost at the end of monsoon season which had caused a severe problem of flooding all over the seoul city. as he put up some white noise(that sounds more like waves from the ocean) reverberating around the hall, it was more intensified with the sound of rain hitting on the plastic-made-rooftop covering the middle of containers. it was loud enough to make people auditorily upset and to cut off the conversation between them and in a good sense, good enough to make people feel like they are at the beach. after the 20 minutes of white noise, people seem to be out of their mind as if they were taken to the extraordinary journey of sounds. even after the performance, this state of mind stayed longer in the ears and even in the space being fortified by unbelievably high amount of rainfall but people soon found peace in their mind.

if you want to experience loss and return of your inner peace by this unusual audible expedition, keep an eye on him and his following movement. he has been holding this event in most random places beyond your imagination. like previously, korean traditional tea house, deep in the forest and most recently at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE. it might be happening in your town anytime soon.
