"Green energy. Everyone wants it, but not in their backyard. An odd thing for a country known for its picturesque windmills dating from the 18th century. How can we once again give green energy the allure it deserves?"

PLATOON member Daan Roosegaarde had a clear mission when developing his most recent project WINDLICHT - bring green energy closer to the public. With his team of designers and engineers, Roosegaarde developed a special software with a tracking technology detection and connected four wind turbines with bright green light, following the windmill blades rotating at 280 kilometres per hour. Windlicht was inspired by Kinderdijk. For him these windmills from 1740 are a perfect example of Dutch innovation.

Hypnotising slow movement of the wind turbines feels like a dance of light, which puts the wind energy in a different perspective; we follow the moves, how the turbines actually make the energy. The project also serves to promote sustainability through art. Windlicht turns into a medium to inspire the dialog between the public, art, and environment.

Daan Roosegaarde is well known for his innovative implementing sustainability into design. A few of the most interesting ones are Smog free project, Waterlicht and Smart highway, all three of them addressing global issues through art. Windlicht is a big and bright installation that ironically, reminds us on making small steps towards a better greener tomorrow.
